BARTLETT HIGH SCHOOL — The annual jazz festival has come and gone once again, having taken place at the Bartlett High School theater on January 20. It was a great turnout with several schools such as Chugiak, Service, and South Anchorage in attendance. A multitude of friends and family came out to show their support toward the aspiring musicians. With the theater almost filled up with an enthusiastic audience the students and conductors felt anxious about the event wondering if it would be a success.

Bartlett jazz band direction Jonathan Cannamore said he was a bit anxious himself for the performances.

“I think every musician is always nervous when they perform,” he said. “I knew the students were going to do well since they worked very hard on their performance.”

The students’ hard work was definitely shown in their flawless performance that night.

Four days a week, for 45 minutes, the jazz band students could be found in the band room practicing every morning. They spent multiple weeks perfecting their performance and it was clear that they had put a lot of effort into practicing.

Toward the end of the concert, three Bartlett musicians performed along with the honored jazz band, a collection of each school’s best artists.

“I was feeling a lot of things. I felt good, tired, happy and especially proud of the students and their accomplishment,” Cannamore stated after the festival.

The festival was a success and students are already excited to perform in next year’s concert.
